In the Foundation Stage at St.Josephs,the children are taught to share and care about others reflecting the Catholic values in our school mission statement. Our dedicated Early Years team provide a happy,caring,secure learning environment where your child will flourish.

Term 4

Castles

This term our topic is castle.

We will be learning all about castles and castle life, as well as finding out about our Royal Family.

As part of our topic will we make an information book about castles as well as writing our own castle stories.

In the creative area we are going to create our own coat of arms to hang on the wall, we will also paint pictures of ourselves as different people in a castle for our display.

This term we will be learning lots of different shapes names, to help us with this we have a castle shape construction area.

In the pictures below you will see the huge Castle that has been constructed in our class room so we can pretend we in a real castle. But be warned there is also a dungeon that you might get thrown in to if you do not follow our rules!!!!

Medieval Feast

After learning about castles this term we decided to have a medieval feast. We have been reading lots of castle books and found out that people used to eat bear and pheasant pies. So that’s what we decided we wanted. We also thought we could have jam tarts for pudding. After spending a busy morning making pies, clothes and crowns we spend the afternoon feasting and dancing. We all had a wonderful time.

Open Morning 

We had another very successfuly open morning this week, with every child showing their book to someone special to them.

Planting

As the weather is getting warmer we have begun tidying up our garden and getting some seeds planted ready for the spring to begin.

Today we planted our potatoes deep in the ground. We then planted some pumpkin, marrow and squash seeds in pots so we can take care of them inside. We spoke about how to plant the seeds, then what they need to help them grow.

Fingers crossed they will have begun to grow and be ready to go outside before Easter!

Shape Hunt 

This term in Nursery we have been learning lots about shapes, we have been making our own shape castles and find lots of different shapes in the classroom and outside.

St Joseph's Day 

We had a wonderful day celebrating St Joseph’s Day.

We began by learning about St Joseph being the name of our school, so that means he is very special to us. Then we spoke about how he was Jesus’ daddy on Earth and how he looked after him. We spoke about how people look after us.

Then we learnt a song about St Joseph. In the afternoon we joined with Reception to have a tea party to celebrate St Joseph’s Day.

 

St Patrick's Day 

We had a wonderful time on the 18th March celebrating St Patrick's Day.

We learnt the story of St Patrick travelling to Ireland to teach people about God and how he used the shamrock to represents God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit, like we say when we make the sign of the cross. 

At snack time we enjoyed green milk and tried some soda bread.

In the afternoon Mrs Crompton took us all to the hall teach us all some Irish Dancing.

World Book Day

We have had a wonderful day in Nursery for world book day. We began by looking at everyone's fantastic costumes before going to the Hall for an assembly. We really enjoyed looking at all the different costumes.

After lunch we had a very special treat. In the afternoon the year 3 children came in to read us stories, we had a fabulous time.

Term 3

Traditional Tales

This term we are learning about traditional tales such as:

  • Goldilocks and the 3 Bears
  • Jack and the Bean Stalk
  • 3 Billy Goats Gruff
  • Little Red Riding Hood
  • The Ginger Bread Man
  • The 3 Little Pigs

Chinese New Year

This week we having been learning all about China and the story of Chinese New Year.

We began by listening to the story of the Chinese Zodiac, this year is the Year of the Pig.

Then we decided to have our own Chinese New Year celebration so we made lanterns to decorate the classroom.

We found out Chinese children receive money wallets during Chinese New Year so we made some of our own. We then played lots of maths games counting different amount of coins in to the wallets.

We watched a video about the Chinese festival then recreated our own dragon dance.

On Friday we joined with Reception to have a party, we listened to traditional Chinese music, then enjoyed a Chinese banquet. It was great fun!

Who ate the Porridge?

We have had a very exciting start to the new term,

Mrs Ormrod made us some delicious porridge to try after reading the story of Goldilocks and the three bears but the porridge was too hot!

We decided to go for a walk whilst the porridge cooled down. Whilst we were out something terrible happened in the classroom. When we arrived back some one had eaten all the porridge!!!!!!

Luckily Mrs Ormrod had left some more porridge in the pan so we were still able to try some,

How Tall?

 

We have been busy measuring lots of different things in Nursery, we began by finding out How Tall the three bears were.

                    We have also measured ourselves then lined up in threes, Tall, Medium and Short. 

Next we moved on to ordering different sized bowls and spoons, putting them in order, Big, Medium and Small. We then introduced smaller, tiny, bigger, biggest and measured even more spoons and bowls. 

To help us with this we coloured some porridge oats and filled the different sized bowls using different sized spoons

Scotland 

 

Nursery have had a fantastic day learning all about Scotland. 

We used our Math skills to make some delicious flapjacks

Created our own kilts with hairy knobbly knees 

Used our fine motor skills to scrunch paper to make the Scottish flag, 

And used our gross motor skills to participate in our own Highland Games. 

We tossed the Caber, made our own hammer throw and did tug of war. 

It was great fun!

Nativity

The children worked so hard to learn all of the songs and actions. On the day the children performed amazingly, we are VERY proud of them all.

Christmas Party

After our wonderful Nativity we had a Christmas Party.

We played pass the parcel, danced and ate some delicious party food.

Then we heard a noise on the roof... it sounded like bells... Can you guess who it was

Advent

In class we have been learning about advent. We began by learning that Christmas Day is Jesus birthday, so we spoke about when our birthdays are and sorted photographs of ourselves in to two groups, those that are 3 and those that are 4.

We know that advent means coming and during advent we prepare for the coming of Jesus on his birthday. We learnt about the different candles, we know that there are 3 purple candles 1 pink and 1 white. The White one we light on Christmas Day as this is Jesus' birthday and he is the light of the world.

Open Morning

We had a very successful open morning this week. We invited parents and carers in to look at all the hard work we have been doing.

Baptism 

This week we have been learning about Baptism. We began the week by watching year 1 perform a Baptism in our Nursery. We then spent the week practicing our own baptisms. On Thursday we went across to our church, St Josephs to have a look at the font where some of us have been baptised. We saw the holy water in the front and the huge Easter Candle from which our own baptism candles are lit.

Children in Need

To celebrate children in Need the children came to school dressed in yellow. In class we learnt about children in Need, how Pudsey uses our money to help poorly children and to make children happy again. 

After lunch Austin collected our money and gave us all an ice cream. It was delicious! We then had a Pudsey Picnic, this week we have been learning about the letter P so we ate Popcorn and Pears.

Poppy Day

On Monday we learnt about Rememberance Sunday. We began by attending Receptions fantastic assembly, they told us about the soldiers that look after us and how some of them died in the war. As part of the assesmbly we took part in a two minute silence to remember the soldiers. When we went back to class we made our own Poppies.

Diwali

This week we have been finding out about Diwali, it is the 'festival of lights' and is celebrated by Hindus.

During the festival Hindus celebrate the return of Rama and Sita, we have been learning about this story and watched a video all about it on Cbeebies, see link below. 

We have coloured some rice to make some Rangoli patterns to welcome people to our class room, we have also begun to make some Divas (Diya) which the lamps people lit to help Rama and Sita find their way back home. 

Mrs Ormrod made us a beautiful Palace so we can act out the story of Rama and Sita.

Bonfire Night 

To celebrate bonfire night we decided to build our own bonfire in the garden we then put in different coloured tissue to make it look 'on fire'.

In the morning we make chocolate sparklers which we ate, they were delicious!

Then we had some hot chocolate to keep us warm.

Halloween

There have been lots of spooky goings on in Nursery this week.

Exploding Pumpkins, Potion Making, A Witches Kitchen and Play Dough Pumpkins.

On Wednesday we had a Halloween party with Reception, we watched a spooky film called ‘Room on the Broom’. Then we did some Scary Dancing before eating our Halloween Feast made up of  magic wands, bats bloody sandwiches, skeleton biscuits and blood juice.

Term 1

This term we have been really busy settling in to Nursery, exploring our classroom and making lots of new friends.

5 Currant Buns 

In Nursery we have learning lots of new songs, one of our favourite is 5 Currant Buns. 

We decided to make our own bakers shop with currant buns and pennys. 

Then we took it in turns to dress up as the baker and sing the song. The next week we decided we needed to make our own currant buns. 

Frist we washed our hands because we don’t want germs.

Then we helped Mrs Shaw read the ingredients and made sure we had everything we needed. We weighed the ingredients on the weighing scales then helped mixed them together in a big bowl.

When they were cool we iced the buns and put a cherry on the top. As it was a lovely sunny day we decided to have a picnic and eat our currant buns. 

We also made some playdough currant buns.

Rice

We have had a fantastic time exploring the rice, talking about full, nearly full, half full, nearly empty and empty.

Have a go a dying some rice at home, we used 3 teaspoons of white vinegar and some food colouring.

Italian Day

Nursery have had a wonderful time celebrating Italian Day!

We learnt about Giuseppe Arcimboldo a famous Italian Artist,

he made his pictures by painting different fruit we were inspired by his art work and decided to make some of our own. 

 

 

We had a fantastic time feeling and describing the multi-coloured spaghetti

                 'it is very slimy'

Then we made mini pizza’s with Mrs Ormrod. 

In the afternoon we had a party with Reception, ate our pizza’s and danced to Italian music.

Going on a Bear Hunt 

We have all really enjoyed listening to the story 'We're going on a bear hunt' so Mrs Ormrod decided to make our own bear hunt in the classroom. 

We had a fantastic time Acting out all the different parts, especially the Squelching mud (which actually squleched!)

Macmillan Coffee Morning

The children baked some cakes with Mrs Ormrod for our Tea Party for the Macmillan Nurses

We then had a lovely party

 

 

We spoke about how Nurses look after people who are poorly.
