Year 1

Welcome to Year 1's class page!

 

Here at St. Joseph's we aim to 'have life and have it to the full', we will be making lots of fun memories this year. We have a very challenging year ahead of us but Year 1 are settling in very well and we are all enjoying exploring our new class! This page will be filled with class events and information as well as exciting activities we are doing in class and around school.

Important Information

Each week I will be sending home the children's blue homework books. The children should choose one task from the homework grid each week and bring the book to school each Wednesday, this will be returned to the children on a Friday.

 

Please try to read with your child every night and sign the yellow reading record.

 

PE will be held on a Thursday this half term as we are having weekly sessions with Manchester United, children will need; red t-shirt, black shorts and black pumps. Please make sure your child's name is in their PE kit.

 

Phonics Screening Check 

 

The children have been learning phonics in both Nursery and Reception to help them read words. Phonics teaches children to be able to listen carefully and identify the sounds that make up each word. This helps children to learn to read words and to spell words. In year 1, all children in the country will take part in a phonics screening check in June. Over the course of the year, they will be learning a lot of sounds, but these sounds need to be learnt both in the context of real words and nonsense words.The children will be asked to use their phonic knowledge to read 20 real words and 20 nonsense words (alien words). The children will know when a word is a nonsense word as there will be a picture of an alien next to the word - we say this word is the aliens name and this is why it does not make sense to us. 

 

How to help your child at home

- Play lots of sound and listening games

-Read as much as possible

- Encourage children to have a 'good guess'

- Remind children to blend the sounds in the word by pointing to them

- In school the children use the Phonics Play website to help reading real and fake words and play games such as Picnic on Pluto or Buried Treasure

Spring 1 - Traditional Tales

This term our topic is Traditional Tales, we will be exploring the different stories we already know and retelling them, we will be looking at the setting and characters and talking about similarities in the stories. We will also be looking at maps in Geography including the seven continents and oceans and in Science we are looking at different materials and investigating different materials.

We had lost of wonderful characters join us in class for World Book Day, the children enjoyed talking about their characters and reading posts of different stories.

The children have been loving building with cups and blocks, the children can create what’re they like and are creating some amazing designs.

We have had a very interesting week in class! We have been looking at the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears, we followed instructions and made porridge and the next day when we came into class it was a mess! the chairs were turned over and we looked around the class for clues. After a discussion of all our evidence we decided that it was Goldilocks who had been in our class, we made wanted posters and are waiting to speak to Goldilocks.

Autumn 2 - Animals

The children have enjoyed making Christingles and have been talking about what each part of the Christingle represents.

In History, our topic is Toys. We have already looked at the toys we play with now and when we were babies. This week the children have enjoyed playing with Victorian Toys and the children even had a go at making their own cup and ball games!

Autumn 1 - Superheroes

 

This term our topic is Superheroes, we will be looking at how we can make ourselves strong, what our super senses are and enjoying some exciting stories to help us with our writing. We are trying hard to remember to use our phonics, finger spaces and letter formation.

This week we have been reading the story of Supertato and when we came into class we were met with chaos! The Evil Peas had come in and made a mess so we had to get to work saving the vegetables. We freed the carrots from the board, the sprouts from the jar, butternut squash was trapped in the door and the poor broccoli had a mustache! The children quickly got to work setting up the crime scene and taking photographs as evidence. We then decided that we needed to stop the Evil Peas, so we made traps and created missing posters. We were very successful and are happy to say the peas are back in the freezer and wont be causing any more trouble!
