Year 2

Welcome to Year 2's Class Page!

Welcome to Year 2's class page! Year 2 have settled well into their new class and are working very hard. We have an exciting year planned at St. Joseph's and we cannot wait to continue making lots of memories with your child and to ‘have life and have it to the full’  as our Mission Statement promises.

This page will be filled with our class news, photographs of the different and exciting activities we are taking part in in class and around school! We will also update you with any useful educational websites that might be of interest to you and your child.

Important information:

  • To develop your child's reading skills it is important that they read every day. Please could you sign their Reading Record book whenever they read with you.
  • Homework books will be given out on a Friday and homework is returned on Wednesday.
  • The weekly spelling test will take place on a Friday.
  • PE is on Thursdays. All children will need black shorts, a red t-shirt and black pumps or trainers.
  • It is important that your child continues to learn their times tables. Year 2 are expected to know their 2, 5 and 10 times tables and division facts by the end of the year and any help you can give them is very much appreciated.

Times Tables Rockstars

Times tables are very important at St. Joseph's and we are always looking for new ways to improve. Year 2 have the very important job of trialling out a subscription on behalf of the whole school for the next 4 weeks. The website is Times Tables Rockstars and the web address is

https://ttrockstars.com/

Your child has been provided with a username and password which can be found in their reading record books. We would be very grateful if you could encourage your child to play this fun yet educational game at home if they have access to a computer, laptop, ipad or other tablet. Each child has been challenged to learn their 10 times tables initially, although I will be keeping an eye out for those ready to move on to their 5's and 2's. Thank you again for your continued support.

What a fantastic time we had at Fairy Forest! Year 2 had a number of challenges to tackle throughout the day...they had to build an entire fairy village complete with houses, a clock tower, a square and even a number line (it turns out fairies are not very good at counting!). The children battled on through the rain determined to complete their mission with no grumbles, we were very impressed.

For lunch we enjoyed sausage barms, toasted marshmallows and popcorn all made on the open fire by the wonderful Ranger. The children all listened very carefully to the Ranger's safety advice and were exceptionally sensible and mature.

In the afternoon the sun finally came out as we were set another challenge - to build a MASSIVE water chute - and my goodness what a massive water chute we made, it was incredible!

The children were an absolute asset to our school and they worked together as a team fantastically. What great memories we have made just 2 weeks into the new school year!

In our Maths lessons we are learning all about Place value. The children have many opportunities to find out about numbers using our different maths equipment. They are getting really good at using number beads, cubes and Base 10 to name but a few.

In our English lessons, we have been reading the book ‘On the Way Home’ by Jill Murphy. The children have become fully immersed in the story and have even made up their own versions. They have acted their new stories out for the class and we are looking forward to getting it all down on paper next week! Keep an eye out on here for some of the finished pieces!
